If you check out the link below, you will learn about a movie coming out December 7th called the Golden Compass.  It will star Nicole Kidman and it is being called the anti-Narnia.  The film is based on a series of books which are anti-God, anti-church and anti-religion.  This site will tell you all the details.

Some Christians will call for boycotts to protest this film.  In my mind, all that does is get the movie even more publicity and make kids want to see it even more.

I’d like to suggest a different approach.  If your kids want to see any movie or read a book that you fear might be different from what you believe, why not read the book with them or take them to the movie and then go out for a coke and talk about it.  Tell your child why you disagree and what you believe.

My son wanted to read Striptease when he was in seventh grade.  I wasn’t too sure about that, but I never censored his reading (I did censor movies).  So we read the book together and we talked about it.  I told him how I felt about the exploitation of women.  We talked about the good guys and the bad guys and how people decide what is right and what is wrong.  We talked about values and morals.  All the while he just thought he was reading a risqué book.  For me it was a perfect teaching moment.

I will probably go see this movie when it comes out just so I can answer questions and concerns that come up.  I will be happy to tell you what I think.  But instead of banning or boycotting I encourage you to use this kind of thing for teaching and passing on the values and beliefs you hold dear.

Teri- well said from a parenting perspective- I teach the boys to always wear their BS detectors and view books and media with a level of expectation that there may be a hidden agenda- My mother, a journalist took the same approach to literature and to movies- no censorship ever- instead insuring a mature and critical discussion and dialogue to properly frame the material. alas I do control movie viewing at home as I abhor violence and physical cruelty and so I do my best to keep it out of the house.

I loved the pie video-- it should be on our website and send as in link in the email blasts..
Keep blogging!

I agree.

My parents never censored my reading: In the 4th grade I began reading the same trashy romance novels that my mom read and in first grade I tested into a 9th grade reading level. The reading level was due to my dad and I begining to read Red Storm Rising together when I was 6. He made me read it to him and helped me figure out new words.

If we hide ideas and ways of life from children, what will happen when they find them and you are not around to disscuss with them? I know I don't have children but this is the kind of parent I HOPE I would be if I did.
