Last week we had a big program at church on Eritrea, the home country of Mekonen and Abrehet. We learned a great deal about refugee camps and what it means to lose your country, your homeland, your life and family.
Some of the women in the church made a beautiful quilt to give the family. One side has an African themed fabric and the other side is red, white and blue. Betty Bowers explained as she presented the quilt that many quilters make quilts for members of their family. This quilt was for the Mokonen’s as new members of the Northminster family.
Family rituals are important. I always talk to couple who are planning to marry about their distinct family rituals and how they plan to reconcile them. Traditionally, Lent was a time for new Christians to learn the rituals of the Christian family so they could join on Easter.
Do you have any rituals in your life that are distinctly Christian? Any that feed you spiritually? Any you wish you had? Any rituals that detract from your faith. Lent might be a good time to consider these things.
