Snow Days

Yesterday the IPS schools closed, not because of weather, but because too many bus drivers called in sick.  They wanted the day off to celebrate the Colt’s victory in the Super Bowl.

Today is the first Tuesday of the month which means it is Team Night.  It is snowing and I am hoping deep down that it snows enough for us to cancel team night.

I think this is the time of year when we all long for a free day- a snow day – an unplanned holiday – a day with no plans and no agenda.

When I lived in DC we had a snow week one winter.  Big snows are few and far between there so the city had no equipment for clearing streets.  We had a blizzard of over two feet of snow.  The side streets could not be cleared and people’s cars were buried and the whole city shut down for a week.  Thomas and I walked to the grocery with his sled.  I felt like I was living in little house on the prairie.

Why is it that it takes an act of God for us to take a day off or stay home with our family around the fire for an evening?  Why do we over schedule our lives so much that any excuse for down time is good?

I am going to mark one day off each month on my calendar as a snow day.  No errands, no work, no have to do list.  On my snow days I can only do fun things and I cannot plan anything ahead.  Just be.  Maybe I will sleep late and have hot chocolate.  Oh, there I go, planning the day.  Maybe I will just…

Unanticipated demands, interruptions, extra duties, all make us feel crowded and pushed--like things are running us instead of us running them. Slow down. Take a time out. Nature demands that, now and then, we allow our souls to catch up with our bodies. Snow day, anyone?
